Mary Louise Huffman Lampman went to be with the Lord Jesus on Friday, December 12, 2014. She was born in 1919 in Winchester, Tennessee—a little town in the Cumberland Mountains half way between Nashville and Chattanooga—to Elma Adeline Taylor and James Thomas Huffman. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Marie, two brothers James and William Huffman and son-in-law Tony Shelton. Mary Louise Lampman is survived by her dear and beloved husband of 72 years, Ed Lampman; two loving daughters, Gayle Shelton of Black Mountain, N.C. and Linda Ragsdale of Hot Springs Village; granddaughter Kimberly Anne Shelton of Los Angeles, California who called her “Lulu”; several nieces and nephews; and her 50 year plus good friend Wanda Turner of Columbia, Tennessee and stepmother of niece Marie McChesney (Mac) Turner Ramsay of Highlands, N.C.
Mary Lou graduated from Shorter College in Rome, Georgia in 1939 where she studied music and history. Music was always her passion and she instilled in her family much appreciation for that inspiring art form. She was an outstanding leader, always quiet, unassuming but highly effective in any endeavor. After eight years of gently persevering, she led her husband to become a Christian in 1950 and join the Presbyterian Church. She and her husband continued their church affiliation in every community where they lived and in Hot Springs Village both at Kirk in the Pines for five years and Woodlands Presbyterian as charter members for 19. She was a church leader and directed the 100th Anniversary pageant of her family’s church, First Presbyterian Church of Waukegan, Illinois. Shortly after the Old Testament Deep Sea Scrolls were discovered about 1950, Mary Lou researched the facts and made a wonderful presentation of the story. She was a proud 60 year plus member of her PEO Philanthropic Women’s Educational Association and served as president of her chapter in Waukegan.
She was the right hand of leadership in the Waukegan YWCA, at Encyclopedia Britannica Education Films in Atlanta, Georgia and the American Red Cross of Nashville, Tennessee. She was a leader as a “rosarian” in Nashville for 21 years where she nurtured 42 rose bushes for some of the biggest and best flowers, then had her husband deliver them to homes and hospitals for healing and good cheer to those in need. Mary Lou was truly an influential, gracious and loving person in the lives of her family and those close to her. She and her husband celebrated 72 wonderful, happy and blessed years together, and enjoyed two wonderful daughters.
A memorial service will be held at Woodlands Presbyterian Church of Hot Springs Village on Saturday, December 20th at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions are encouraged for Good Samaritan Society at 121 Cortez Road, Hot Springs Village or to the charity of your choice.
